003: Goat Hill Park
Goat Hill Park is much more than just a golf course—it's a community that proudly calls this place home. Nestled in a special corner of Oceanside, California, Goat Hill was once slated for development but has since become one of the nation's most well-known municipal golf courses. You can read the full Save Goat Hill story here, which covers the mission their team is dedicated to pursuing.
“The Goat” brings a laid-back SoCal approach to golf, far from traditional but widely respected and appreciated. With no dress code and a dog-friendly atmosphere, it's a place where music fills the driving range, and the vibe is always high.
When asked to describe Goat Hill, I often call it "a vibe" because it offers a golf experience that makes time feel as though it’s slowing down. It's the kind of place where a quick nine holes after work often turns into a clubhouse hangout around the fire pit with a cold drink in hand. I’ll even drive past three other driving ranges just to hit balls here—it’s simply a fun place to be.
Goat Hill draws like-minded people who share a passion for golf, regardless of their skill level. The course itself is uniquely challenging, demanding creativity as you navigate its undulating and quirky landscape. Many assume from the scorecard that it will be a walk in the park (pun intended) but are surprised by its difficulty. With target golf, small turtle-back greens, and a recent tee box renovation that allows it to play much longer, this 4,600-yard par-65 course tests every aspect of your game.
The greens are often fast, with subtle breaks that keep you re-reading putts all day. Don’t be surprised if you accidentally de-green yourself on a tricky putt! The challenge has even inspired the term “goated,” referring to shots with unexpectedly unfortunate outcomes.
Despite its challenges, Goat Hill promises a great time—and even a workout if you take on the hike.
I highly recommend visiting Goat Hill Park with an open mind. Embrace the funky kicks, the sketchy lies, and the course’s unique charm within the traditionally structured world of golf.
